Freshwater Pearl Jewelry

Freshwater pearls are created by inserting an irritant into the shell of a live, freshwater mussel, causing the mussel to coat the irritant with nacre, which eventually forms a pearl. They come in a number of shapes from round to baroque, from flat flakes to teardrop shape, in many shades of white, ivory and gray, as well as pastels such as peach and lavender. Color is determined by a number of factors such as mussel species, genetics, water quality and the position of the pearl in the shell when it is being formed. Often times, jewelers will also use dyes to enhance the color of the pearl to obtain the desired color. Aside from their affordability relative to cultured and natural pearls, freshwater pearls are very durable because they are made of solid nacre (no bead at the center), resistant to chipping and degeneration, and very easy to care for.
